Belmont, MA

Designed by Matthew Cunningham, a Boston based landscape architect, this project on Belmont Hill was a recipient of a 2009 BSLA Award. The house sits on top of this steeply sloping site dotted with rock outcroppings and populated with mature oak, hickory, and mountain laurel. A richly layered perennial and shrub garden welcomes visitors and directs them to the house and further to the woodland garden. Terraced stone walls support a finely patterned brick patio and planting beds of shrubs, grasses, and perennials. Massings of pieris, dogwood, and ferns drift around outcroppings and trees. A stone staircase connects the upper terraces to the lower grass glade and further into abutting conservation land.
