Hatfield,
MA
Situated along the Connecticut River in the historic farming town of Hatfield,
this project entailed a gravel courtyard nestled beneath an old japanese
maple and even older sugar maple. Brick from a demolished chimney was used
as edging with bluestone flagging directing pedestrian movement. Wide bluestone
steps transition from indoors to a flagstone threshold. A boxwood edge
contains a bed of pachysandra framing the massive sugar maple. Views to
the east exhibit rolling farmland and a lawn path leading to a pedestrian
path atop the dike. All construction was done by hand to minimize damage
to extensive tree roots.
