Northampton,
MA
Located within walking distance of downtown Northampton makes this site
ideal for the environmentally conscious home owners. With their primary
mode of transportation being bicycle, the asphalt driveway was no longer
needed.
Three distinct spaces were created: An entry garden, kitchen garden,
and understory garden. The entry garden abounds with sunny perennials
with a gravel parking spot for visitors. The new kitchen garden supports
espaliered dwarf apple trees, grape vines, and raised cedar vegetable
beds. A wide stone path and gateway allow the clients to roll right to
the garage with bike and trailer. Descending down wide stone steps from
the kitchen garden one enters the understory garden. With two centennial
sugar maples providing a green ceiling, this space provides a restful
retreat from the close knit neighborhood. A stone edged lawn space and
gravel pathways provide places for contemplation. A slate roofed wood
crib doubles as a privacy edge from the neighbors. Layered plantings
of redbud, witchhazel, mountain laurel, and ferns satisfy the clients
mission of re-establishing native plants. The grade drops sharply off
to a seasonal waterway which the clients are in the process of restoring
with native vegetation.
